Only child of George IV and his despised wife, Caroline of Brunswick, Charlotte spent her early years virtually ignored by her father, spoiled by her unsuitable mother, and constantly harangued by her grandmother. Then she met the love of her life, Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and refused to marry anyone but him. Tragically Charlotte died in child-birth before her father became King, leaving the House of Hanover in danger of losing the throne of England.
