I agree with Applepisimmer, the heavy nuances of red color is definitely one of the main reasons of why it looked more Chinese than Japanese. Japanese-nuanced colors are usually yellow to brown as opposed to red.

This is definitely more Chinese than Japanese, and it’s not because of EA’s poor content. The styles and colors are more reminiscent of traditional Chinese buildings. Traditional Japanese architecture and design was dominated by wood and muted neutral colors. Some tatami mats have an earthy or muted yellow or green color. Fabric items might introduce some blues and earthy reds. Some cookware had an earthy red color to it as well. Vibrant colors were typically reserved for the wealthy and mostly found on painted screen doors, painted scrolls/artwork, and painted decorative furniture. Shrines, temples, and bridges were painted with vibrant reds, and there’s a handful of castles painted with vibrant colors… but that’s about it.
Circular windows existed in Japan, but they weren’t very common and tended to be very plain, unlike the ones here. Using some basic rectangle wood windows would be better. Steps up to the entrance and red lanterns are more common in Chinese or Korean builds too. Japanese lanterns were usually on the floor or on a table. Hanging lanterns outside tended to be neutral colors and very simplistic. And, ofc, the chen furniture is Chinese.
It’s a beautiful build. Without the Chen set and round ROM windows, it might pass as a Japanese shrine turned into a restaurant? The layout is also more Chinese/shrine-like than Japanese...
