When I was casting about in the melting pot that is my imagination, for something to say about Greenmantle, I could not help but remember a novel I read as a young girl - almost a lifetime ago. Greenmantle, written in 1916 was the sequel to the John Buchan thriller, The 39 Steps and was something of a spy intrigue itself. Even though it was set during WWI and focussed on Turkey and the middle-east - and should be dated - it is and was a rattling good read [as one reviewer recently rediscovered] and I have no hesitation in recommending it for that element alone!
Charles de Lint also wrote a novel with the title, Greenmantle, sometime in the late 1980s I believe. This was a work of fantasy fiction, delving into classical folklore in modern settings, and dealt with in a generally unthreatening manner.
I have not read this version, but intend to.
Now to the present-day Greenmantle. It has nothing at all to do with spies, espionage or the middle-east; nor will you find horned gods dressed in leaves, or burning bone fires on Midsummer's Eve. What you will find is a pleasant, well-furnished and comfortable house with a distinctive roofline.
Under that roof will be found 3 levels of good living just waiting for the right family to come along and move in.
Starting at the top - the third level is completely self-contained and could be set aside as a granny flat, personal space for the young adult of the family or perhaps an apartment for visiting business colleagues. Although it does not have it's own entrance, that should not cause too many problems for an enterprising owner.
On the second level are the 'busy' areas such as an exercise station, the game table, banquet entertaining area and bar, and TV corner as well as a quiet niche containing a chess table. These amenities occupy the centre of the floor area, and there are two bedrooms with bath- one on either wing.
On the ground floor is the master bedroom and the main bathroom with it's double, walk-in shower and deep tub. A spacious livingroom includes a music corner and there is a computer workstation in one 'arm' alongside the portico; the 'arm' on the other side contains a second chess table, perfect for those impromptu practice sessions.
There is hat and coat hanging space in the foyer, and a wide arch leads into the very large kitchen. This is state-of-the-art, with only the best and very latest appliances including a dual oven and inbuilt microwave. There is a breakfast nook/snack bar close to the cooking facilities, as well as a 6 seat dining area in it's own space.
The portico itself, is a wide and beautifully tiled colonnade supported by two tall columns and enhanced by plants and a small fountain on either side. Entry from street level is gained via a set of shallow steps across the full width of the porch. Flanking the portico, are identical statues of Atlas, with the world on his shoulders in the classic pose. These are poised on wall-height plinths - one on either side of the entry - and illuminated after dark.
Finally, not to be forgotten, the exterior. Gardens are planted with minimal maintenance in mind and the main feature is the fishing pond with it's little bridge [completely operational and safe to use by the way] and plantings of colourful shrubs - not to overlook the outdoor eating area and the loungers under the black gum at the side rear. A set of gates in the side fence beyond the pond, allows easy access to the community fishing spot - Angler's Reach - which is on the adjacent lot.
. . . and that is Greenmantle, Sims variety.
