Based on ancient Celtic traditions many Wiccans recognize that the year is divided into 8 major sabbats. Samhain (equated with Halloween), marks the beginning of the year at October 31st to November 2nd and is spent honoring the dead ancestors. Yule (or Midwinter) is the Winter Solstice, and can occur anywhere between December 19th and the 23rd (around Christian Christmas, which copied many traditions from the vastly older 'pagan' observations). Candlemas/Imbolc occurs around the first week of February and marks the lactation of the ewes (female sheep) as they prepare to give birth to the springtime lambs. The old Irish fire goddes Brigid (Christianized as St. Brigid) was also honored during this time. After Imbolc is the Vernal/Spring Equinox at around the 19th-23rd of March, spent honoring the goddess of fertility and the cycle life-death-rebirth, Ostara. The Christians needed to appease the pagans under their control, so they took Ostara's fertility symbols like the uber-fertile rabbit and eggs (a common symbol of birth), merged her lore with that of The Christ, and invented Easter, which is named after the goddess Ostara. My younger sister, a 'May Baby', was born on Beltane morning, May 1st. On May Day the spring and good weather is celebrated with the burning of a huge bonfire, dancing around the May Pole, and a May King and Queen would be crowned. Another bonfire would be burned on Litha/Midsummer around June 19-23rd on this Summer Solstice. As autumn kicks in Lughnasadh or Lammas/Loaf Mass was a time of finalizing contracts and a popular time for weddings (called handfastings) and the harvest fields would be blessed. The last holy day of the year occured on the Autumn Equinox, called Mabon, on around September 20-24th, and thanks would be given (like in the uncannily similar 'Thanksgiving') for the fruits, grains and foods harvested in a great feast.
