The game programer for the games use cheats to help them get things done faster.
here is a cheat for sims 2 that will tell you a list of cheats: 1.help.

Cheats are my life saver nuthing is good with out them.
here are some cheats for Sims 1:
Press [Ctral] + [Shift] + [C] to get the cheat box at the top left corner.
1. rosebud
2. move_objects on
3. move_objects off
4. map_edit off
5. map_edit on

those are some that work
