Hi hi and Welcome   Sorry about getting back to you so late with this answer. The top bunk is deco only.  The bed was one of the first bunks to be made, before it was figured out how to get the child to the top bunk.  I know that there are bed made now that a child will get to the top bunk.  I hope this helps
